The houses down my road were built in 1960. We moved from a house that was built in 1899. I still consider our house a 'new build' but when they come up for sale they are described as 'mid century'. That makes me feel old!

More to do with feeding them than affection.Cats most certainly can be affectionate, nothing to do with comfort. Our "new" cat (a good few years old now) was very cold towards me when he first arrived (more so than other members of the family), but now he comes and sits on my lap for a cuddle.
This is despite the fact that I am the chosen one when it comes to putting flea stuff on the back of his neck, which he absolutely hates.
