potterton 80 Combi Excessively hot water

Id hope the BG engineers have checked the burner and that its modulates. Seems that a few round my way have been neglecting basic checks.

Another BG fallout job today, they told the customer they definately needed a powerflush since a couple radiators weren't heating up at all and they were full of sludge....it would only be £750.

The 7 radiators are not much more than a year old on a year old combi system (pipework existing). All it needed was very careful balancing...it would appear someone had disconnected the kitchen radiator and just joined the flow/return together under the ceramic tiled floor (ie no access to check for sure).

As a result the return temperature is much higher than it should be so the boiler won't condense much and the system takes a lot longer to heat up.

Just from this years heating season (and the number of BG customers I've seen) I reckon 9 out of 10 BG powerflushes are totally un-necessary.

I did a power flush for a BG customer which was totally unecessary!

But then I did it for only £350 compared with their £700.

i still say its the wax diverter it happens so much on the pumas i carry them now in my van.

How does a diverter not working roperly cause excessively hot tap water? All it could do wrong would be divert water to the CH, which would COOL the tap water. Or am I missing something?

BG have finally fitted a new heat exchanger as they allege they have fitted new system boards and thermisters. The lockouts are gone but the hot water is still excessive(over 22 degrees) I am not sure if I should get them to come out again as I have no idea what else they can do

The hot water should be about 42° C so I dont know why you think that 22° is too hot, its mildly luke warm !

It sounds as if they did not bother to check the gas valve settings. I suspect that you have a poor water flow and the gas valve settings are incorrect.

BG people sometimes dont have very good diagnostic skills and often just change expensive parts hoping that will make it work!

Thanks Tony, I thought that was the temperature that they measured it at, i have probably got it wrong. :( The system runs on mains pressure and the flow when they measured it was supposedly fine from the hot tap

Thats the problem!

Its essential to measure the maximum AND the minimum gas pressure!

Failing to do that initially creates these situations where the boiler does not work properly and changing expensive parts will not solve it.

It just demonstrates that they dont understand the basic operation of boilers.

I have been to several boiler where idiots have wound the minimum up to the maximum and then wonder why it cycles on/off every few seconds!
