On a 4m extension, 10cm is not gonna hurt anyone, but 50cm...? Suppose it depends on how near it is to the adjoining property's windows.
Private inspectors are required to notify LPAs of any extension they supervise at least 5 days before commencement. BUt they just have to say 'single-storey rear extension' or whatever, and attach a 1:1250 plan, but no drawings. And if they know what's good for them, they wouldn't let on in a case like this.
With it being 50cm over, maybe the LABC guy was concerned about being in trouble with his boss for not pointing out the large discrepancy if it ever came out? But inspectors rarely concern themselves with overall size - just standards. And as fmt, LABC and Planning rarely talk to each other.
