How terrible that people can create a site to lure people in to committing suicide. These people need to be prosecuted. They clearly aren't the ones committing suicide otherwise the site would collapse.

And blocking the websites will obviously stop people finding a way to take their lives in future.

I think you are misunderstanding the power of group encouragement. People will always find ways to kill themselves. However, forums that encourage the vulnerable and help them make the decision will of course result in more people committing suicide instead of getting help.

Does that apply to destroying public property, or ignoring speed limits also?
What about stopping charity donations to rescue services?

You have a very myopic view of the world around you.

And anyone makes any ludicrous allegations, I have no interest in this website, I wouldn't even have known about the closure if the thread had not been posted.
My only concern in the thread is the immense hypocrisy shown by some.

These sites seem driven by money and a belief they are helping. Sounds like Diggnitas.

Blup

I have read stories in our press in the past of someone who was on a live stream being egged on by others to do the deed.

Sick.

These observers are obviously not interested in killing themselves, they're just ghoulish voyeurs.

They need locking up for life.

I suspect the pro suicide choice would like a comparison. It’s very different.

One provides a service for those with terminal illnesses to avoid a painful, slow death for example.

The other encourages people with mental health issues to kill themselves. No doubt those doing the encouragement get a sick thrill from their success.

He hanged himself.

I read that story and thought better moderation of the site would be a big help.

What say you?

A few years ago an online "game" surfaced on the internet aimed at young people.
They had to follow several challenges and the final step was to commit suicide.
It was called blue whale.
Sick!

Yes and no.
While (better) moderation is needed, sometimes I think if sites like that were strictly moderated, there very quickly wouldn't be a site left to moderate.

In other words, what I'm saying is that these kind of sites are only there for the sick ghouls.

Do these websites offer people an opportunity to seek counselling and provide a means for them to find help before they go further?

A few years ago a crowd gathered to watch a chap on top of the Assembly Rooms in Derby. He threatened to jump. Nobody stopped him. Far from it; they actually encouraged him to do so. Not one passer-by thought to intervene and nobody wondered why a group of strangers were actively hoping for his death.
Websites are not the problem.
