Hi all ive recently moved in to my new house and havnt been able to get our outside security light to work so i thought id have a look at the switch and thats what i found. I know its a two way switch but theres no other switch for it. I know the 3 core cable coming in is the mains and the four core cable goes to the light. Also that the red cable hanging lose is the main. Really trying to wire this up dnt want to just turn of the elc and wrap the cables seperily in elctric cable. Does any one have any ideas on how to wire this with out and elcetrican.??

Would you be able to tell us what terminals the cables are connected to in the light. If its a security light i think i can see what they have tried to do but i need to be sure, on a side note wiring it the way i think wont provide you with any means of safely isolating it for maintenance other than switching off the circuit its supplied from (assume the lighting circuit). Basically the switch will give you the option of having the light on constant or in sensor mode.

All the best
Dan

on the three core live side its red black and earth, for the lighting side its blue to neutral, red to live, yellow to live 1 and earth to earth.

Ok you need to join the black and the blue together, using one of the terminal blocks. Put the red from the "live" side to the com terminal of the switch and leave the red & yellow that go to the light where they are.

Now as i already said with it wired like that the switch wont fully isolate the light, all it will do is allow you to either have it permanently on or in automatic sensor mode.

I would find out once its working what circuit its fed from by switching the light on and turning off circuits at your consumer unit until it goes off (start with the lighting circuits). Then if you ever need to carry out maintenance on the light you know which circuit to turn off.

Let us know how you get on

If you want the switch to switch the light between off and normal operation (as opposed to normal operation and sensor override, which it does now), then you can remove the yellow conductor from the switch and place it in a spare bit of terminal block.

If you wanted to have your cake and eat it, you'd have to swap the switch for a double gang one.

You shouldn't use the light switch for maintainace of the light anyway though, switch it off at the breaker when re-lamping it, but for functional purposes, the above is what you need to do to be able to totally switch it off to stop random stuff activating it
