Quick question re: immersaion cylinder

I was told years ago never to cap the primary's ALWAYS leave open as when hot the coil can split as it cant expand??
I always leave open in case

There's a problem either way. If capped, the coil may split, but so what? If not capped, if the coil split or corroded then you have water everywhere. The only sure-fire solution is to cap the bottom one and connect the top one to an auto-vent.
