I'm more of a traditionalist. I'll tut, or murmur my dissaproval, and then continue on my way to join the next queue. None of this Whatstweeting to Snapbook malarky.

the sample size is too small to be meaningful.

Only 75% of voters are likely to try to record an unexpected drone at the airport.

So where are the clips?

I read that reports of sightings were from staff and some public. Staff that were airside wont have mobiles on them.

There arent really any good places in the terminal to see the sky, let alone a tiny drone.

Perhaps you need to revisit your assumptions (n)

Despite all of the technological advances, mobile phone cameras aren't good for capturing everything (especially for the non-technical, point-and-shoot type user).

Take the Moon, for example.
A few times, I've tried to snap a low full Moon, and every time (despite fiddling with the settings), it's been hopeless.
You'd think, given the detail your eye can pick up, the phone would be similar. But, just a tiny white dot.

Didn't know that.

Is that for "security" reasons, like GCHQ, or because mobile phones will make airports explode like they do petrochemical refineries?

It depends what it is: if it's something that would need intervention, like helping someone in trouble, I would help them immediately without thought.

Some people watch a situation where people need help (fight, car crash, etc....) and just stand there gormlessly watching and or filming.

from the rule book:
Operators must never smoke or use their mobile phones. Not only due to the risk of fire, but also because they will necessarily become less vigilant.
That doesn't mean all airside people, just those in the ASRA

Baggage handlers? Bus drivers? Tarmac menders? Cleaners? Fodder deliveryman? Light-bulb changers? Sewage suckers?

Security as far as I know.
I was involved in supplying the joinery for the Wetherspoons bar in the departure lounge. Whilst the fit out was underway, the area was blocked off from sirside and access was straightforward. I had to go back once the area was open -what a pain, I had to go through both Gatwick secutity and customs, it took 2 1/2 hours.
