And if you haven't, then get one. IF you want to work on your electrics then it's an essential tool, and you should have one in the same way that you should have the right screwdrivers, that you should have wire cutters and strippers rather than use scissors and teeth, and so on.
I met one such on Thursday. He uses a test lamp for all his testing. He was amazed at what a multi-meter could tell him. The fault ( blown fuse in the central heating system ) was found in minutes
OK he was only ever a part time electrician's assistant, retired but is attempting to rewire his retirement home. Disasters pending though he is looking at buying a multi-meter.
Quite possibly, but they probably don't need to. They will hopefully have an MFT (or equivalent) and some sort of 'voltage indicator' - and they can do all the things DIYers are told to use a multimeter for (essentially just measuring voltage and low/lowish resistances) with that kit. A multimeter might just be 'more convenient' at times, which I imagine is why many electricians carry them.
