Racism 'prevalent' in the armed forces, ombudsman warns

Do the Armed Forces reflect wider society or do they attract the type of person who has racial bias?

"the Armed Forces" is composed of a wide and diverse number of very differing elements. Just like society at large, some will be more predicated to racism, some less so.

some will be more predicated to racism, some less so.

And it's always been clearly understood that every member of the British Armed Forces behaves exactly as each of them likes, there is no way they can be told what to do, and even if they did, none of them would pay any attention.

Is that right?

So we stamp out racism in the British Army, and all of a sudden, there will be no more racism anywhere in the world, because the British Army is the last bastion of racism anywhere. What about racism in other institutions and other countries ? This is an invitation for another witch hunt with big payouts and even bigger fees for lawyers, paid for by the British tax payer.

Here we go again! Everybody's favourite subject: racism.

Britain is overrun with enemy foreign combatants, the whole country smells of cannabis, there is chaos everywhere and what are the army doing?

Hand wringing over a few insults.

"Racism is prevalent" within the armed forces, the independent ombudsman overseeing complaints has warned.

In an exclusive interview with the BBC, Nicola Williams, the first person to hold the office of Service Complaints Ombudsman, said "incidents of racism are occurring with increasing and depressing frequency".

She urged the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to do more to root it out.

The MoD has insisted it has a range of measures in place to tackle racism.

Cases of bullying, harassment and discrimination account for 25% of all the complaints the ombudsman receives, and Ms Williams says a "disproportionate" number of those come from ethnic minorities who make up just 7% of the armed forces.

Do the Armed Forces reflect wider society or do they attract the type of person who has racial bias?

That is like saying people only joined the army in WW2 because they were prejudiced against Germans.

Why do people join the army in the first place.?

Interesting question, traditionally recruitment has always been strongest in areas of 'high deprivation', the army (or navy etc) can offer a route out of that and offer training in skills that can be used after the army. I've read that it's becoming harder to recruit these days, maybe there's a lot less deprivation about.
