Firstly, when metric pipework came out, this is what happened to the sizes of pipe (tube):
1/2" became 15mm
3/4" became 22mm
1.0" became 28mm
etc.
You're quite right that the nut's not 1/2" across, however the British Standard Pipe threads are always specced to match up to the imperial pipe size of the original standard.
So any 15mm compression joint you buy (for example) you would always say it comes with 1/2" threads. And so on.
If you mean the compression end thread then "And so on" is wrong.
All 15mm compression end threads are 1/2" BSP, no matter what make. All other sizes are b@stard threads, i.e. a Conex capnut won't fit a Kuterlite or Prestex fitting.
