Hi all, just connected a second hand dual fuel Rangemaster cooker and the larger oven on the left trips the RCD. First time I tried it, it smelt of smoke and there was a small amount of smoke. I turned it off, tried again and it tripped the RCD. The smaller oven on the right works absolutely fine. Any ideas please? Thank you.

Mineral insulated cables and elements are hydrophilic, and the slightest damage to the ends, and they need replacing. To test you need an insulation tester VC60B.jpgthey use 500 volts in the main, so without the meter not much you can do DIY wise, as the neutral can cause the RCD to trip as well as the line, if not bad enough to trip can test with a clamp-on meter Diffrence line neutral 8 Feb 24 reduced.jpg but if tripping insulation tester is the only way to find out which bit is faulty.

Disconnect and insulate the wires to the element of the oven that trips then try switching it on. If it does not trip then that suggests the element is the cause. As Eric says they can absorb moisture from the air and if you have just bought it S/H and it was stood unused in a damp atmosphere for some time then it may be that is all the problem is. You can either replace the element or try it on a very low setting for a couple of hours to dry it out if it does not trip when reconnected.
