Rated People any good?

The best tradespeople don't need to join clubs like checkatrade, rated people etc. They are in demand because they are good. Word of mouth is the best way to find trades. Be prepared to wait though for the best.

Depends on volume you want, there are people saying there busy and wont touch sites like that yet are rolling home at 2-3pm and content on there 400 quid a week.

Sorry to offend. I didn't mean everyone who uses them is carp. Needs must etc.

I don't mind saying that I have/will use rated people, I find I have to be careful about which jobs I go for, I have certain criteria, chances are I won't make a decent profit on the initial job however since I only started working for myself 6 months ago its a small necessity, the way it works for me...

I get a job from rated people, I perform the service well and customer is happy, customer recommends me to neighbor and they take a job with me, initital customer gets me back for further work and also neighbor recommends me to a local friend who also take a job with me.

I wish only to build contacts not as a business model, it will fill its purpose in time.

I feel I am a *decent* tradesmen, so blanket statements about how decent tradesmen wouldn't use rated people are a little bit off.

I used them when they first started as they gave 5 free leads if you signed up , got one really nice job from it but a couple of other leads I followed were towl waste of time,.
First one they were just shopping about and weren't really I intrested in getting anything done ,another saying" will you people stop calling me I've ad 6 calls today and it been going on for days leave me alone" and last one wanted a bathroom replaced and had been quoted £250 and could I beat it.

Being that these leads can cost between £6 and £20 it wasn't something I was going to be paying for.

shouldn't get more than 3 calls. I was dubious whether this was true but I checked with a couple of customers and they told me they only ever got 3 calls.

I have the same problems with it as you do, but it serves its purpose for me anyway, and i won't be using it forever.

Yeh sorry. I know there good sorts starting out who need a leg up. My bad.
What I wanted to get accross is these schemes are advertising at the end of the day and not a guarantee of quality. If you're good and you need them fair play.

but what is at the end of the day?

I fitted a hob yesterday and the old dear showed me her 3 month old glowworm, that took 3 weeks to install @ 1995 quid.

a quick look and the boiler was un-commissioned, no scale reducer and there was a condense pump even though the boiler was in an airing cupboard at the foot of the bath.

Apparently they were recommended by a friend, so it appears even word of mouth is a bit squiffy sometimes.

The reality is that those quoting are mostly recently started, often third world and usually struggling to get enough work!

None taken , you will get a mixed bag of trades on there ,for me it helped boost boiler sales as ive spent my life on new build and havent got myself a steady flow of customers.

I get work for a number of sources you never know whats round the corner.

DO NOT USE RATED PEOPLE!!!!!

I had posted a job for the first time on the Rated People.

1. My inbox was suddenly bombarded with emails from third parties and other marketing rubbish!

I have had my email address for over 15 years and i receive very little junk. However now, I am still getting constant rubbish junk mail ever since i posted ONE job onto the Rated People website!!

2. you put your job on Rated People and you'll received lots of emails and calls from all walks of tradesmen. It does not mean they are vetted properly or even rated properly! Most of these guys dont have any ratings. I had one guy phone me and tell me that he has experience because he had once fitted his brothers bath for him. THIS DOES NOT MAKE YOU A PLUMBER!!!!

Rated People is totally rubbish, it's a gimmick at best. If you want proper tradesmen, try the old-fashion way of getting a recommendation through a friend. If on the otherhand you just want a cheap "botch" job done and you dont mind being bombarded with CONSTANT JUNK MAIL then stick with Rated People.

Also i could not see a way of removing my personal detail from the "public eye" of the internet once i had registered my job with Rated People. So beware, you may also get trapped.

Happy DIY-ing! :O)

As a tradesman I wouldn't go near them. I dont need to .All my work comes through word of mouth.
if you are a tradesman, work hard, provide good service, be polite,be honest, be punctual, be reasonably priced.
Do all these things and the work will come to you.
If you are looking for a tradesman, dont use rated people checkatrade or any other derivative of the same, but speak to your neighbours and other local people you trust and ask for recomendations of people who have given them good service.

i run a large outfit with a large area and customer base, i get phone calls all the time from these kind of firms, but why would i ? i ve got good work coming out of my ears.

WARNING DO NOT USE THE RATED PEOPLE WEBSITE .
THE PLUMBER WE HAD WAS APPALLING
RUDE LAZY AND SHODDY WORKMANSHIP !!
2 WEEKS TO TILE AND REPLACE THE SAME SINK SHOWER AND TOILET
WE FINALLY GOT RID OF HIM AND SINK IS LEAKING
TOILET HAS NOT BEEN FINISHED AND TOWEL RAILH AD BEEN SO BADLY DONE IT NEEDS REPLACING

WORD OF MOUTH IS BEST AND WE NOW WAIT FOR A FRIENDS PLUMBER TO COME AND SORT OUT THE MESS!!!!

I used Rated People and it turned out to be a huge mistake. Scott turned up with a so-called plumber to instal a shower and proved to be totally incompetent. they left my home with the shower badly leaking and would not return to make it safe. Scott also refitted a light switch in the kitchen and managed to badly scratch the £35 light switch by wiping caulk all over it. He denied bad workmanship and accused me of touching it! do not use Rated People, they are not qualified tradesmen.
