I didn't do any further fault finding - I felt I had hit the limit of my competence.
Anyway the Spark disconnected all the circuits and the RCD would still not reset,
so the fault was...........(big X-factor style build up)........a faulty RCD.
He changed it then walked round with a bg yellow tester thing round his neck, which he plugged in to various sockets and caused the new RCD to trip before declaring all was well.
I know have leccy back!
