Red Nose day

what was it, about £74M?

Didn't Lakshmi Mittal and Roman Abramovich make almost that on Friday in interest?!!!

Oh and the 100 RBS employees on a £mill salary... yet i get blind Kenyans rammed down my throat !!!!

Or the hundreds of footballers on hundreds of thousands of pounds per week.... they earn as much in 3 and a half days as most plumbers earn in 52 weeks !!! Where were they with their chequebooks? yeah, and the plumbers?

I find it strange that random celebrities fly over to wherever, to trot out the old £5 buys a mosquitto net, then flies back, why not use stock footage with a voice over, and save the cost of the flight? And donate what the flight would have cost?

40% of the money raised is supposed to go to the UK anyway.

How come mosquitto nets cost £5 to produce, but a pair of Adidas trainers cost £3 to make? Somebody is getting rich off the back of all this.

There was a caviat mentioned at the start of RND, that said that DEC hadn't asked for money for the Japanese disaster, so they wouldn't be getting any money to rebuild their country..?

moody, i agree with most of what you said... theres a lot of money knocking around.... and if a mosquito net costs 3 quid, why dont the company that make them do them at cost for the charity?

Yep, I can't believe that it costs £5 to make a mosquito net either. I'd reckon about a pound at most. There again the Beeb probably want us to pay for Lenny to go to Africa...... Hang on a minute ,,, we pay for the TV licence, so we do pay for him to go.
Don't forget,,, In November we'll have Wogan back on the box, getting paid a fortune to present Children In Need, whilst begging for every last penny he can out of Joe Public.

ok, shouldn't there be a means tested tax for charitable purposes instead of an emotionally charged tax? (charity tv)?

Even the RAF joined in this year with it's own 'aid mission' to Africa...

How to blow £74m in a couple of hours!

Yes, about that.

Yes, probably. I'd be interested in your source though.

You can turn the TV off, or change channel.

Or the hundreds of footballers on hundreds of thousands of pounds per week.... they earn as much in 3 and a half days as most plumbers earn in 52 weeks !!! Where were they with their chequebooks? yeah, and the plumbers?

Personally, I can't speak for footballers, but as a plumber I donated. Why the emphasis on plumbers? Again, can you back-up your comments on why plumbers should donate? Your an IT guy are you not? By your rationell, and mates I have who work in software / IT Industry, you earn more than us wee plumbers. (Why should I back-up my findings as you have not).

You discussion is fragrant at best, and blatant lies at worst.

Mr. W.

Well well, i didn't expect such deep analysis of my post. It was intended as a prompt for a debate.

No source for the Mittal/abramovich comment except the fact they are well up the world's rich list.

Yep, fair point about turning off the tv (incidentally, i also donated money to those Kenyan cataract operations).

I chose plumbers because in recent times they have come to represent a trade that is doing considerably well. I didn't mean to insult plumbers per se.

And I didn't lie, because what i wrote was opinion

AFAIK everyone on the rich list, would receive the amount of money stated, in interest, it isn't a secret.

JoinerJohn - I think £1 per mosquitto net is optimistic, my partner used to make football strips for the players, not the ones for the public, and seconds were sold for £5. That's UK labour, not some backwater, where the workers are paid like 30p a week?

Just goes to show the disparacy, rich and poor, where charities from my personal experience are the most corrupt businesses. Rely on donations, but pay the bosses excess, and distribute to Governments, that spend on their regime, rather than the people that need the help.

I became a little sceptical of these celebrity fund-rasiing events a couple of years ago after reading a celeb autobiography where he mentioned that the first time he was asked to do one, he was shocked at the money spent on hospitality for the celebs - they're raising money for charity and wasting huge amounts on the celebrities themselves. I also know that another TV personality will not attend local charity events around where he lives without a substantial fee.

I wont donate to these things unless they start and give details of how much the celebs on telly are getting paid, and what they've spent setting the whole thing up. There are plenty of other charities which don't waste money that I feel deserve my money more than these celeb events. I'd be interested to know how much of their own money Davina, Dermot, Graham, Fearne etc... donated.

And why can't they talk the mobile phone companies to add the 8p per text to the £10 the public were donating?? I wonder how much O2 and Orange etc... made out of the 'texts' generated by Friday night's 'charity' event??

red nose day is just a rip off. why the hell do we have to give money. I believe that millionaires all over the world should donate to charity. If and when that happens it will be the end of poverty in those countries. job done.
