Hey everyone

I’m going to be lifting and relaying some tongue and groove chipboard in my dormer conversion. It’s been laid badly by whoever did it. They’ve laid it in a stack bond fashion 4 corner joints touching) and nailed it down. It’s squeaking a lot and I’m getting new carpets shortly so now is the time to do it.

It’s not glued down as I’ve already lifted some one side. But I’m wary of breaking the tongues all the way along as that’ll cause more movement once it’s relaid. I don’t want to buy too many new boards but understand I’ll need to do some cuts and relay it properly in a brick bond style and glue the joints. The plan was to then screw it down with some floor tite floorboard screws.

Any tips on lifting nailed boards? How many screws per board would you use?

Thanks all

You could cut thru centre of board length ways down centre boards and pry from cut edge , don’t lift completely, just enough to raise nail head , then drop and remove nails which protrude. This should allow you to pry subsequent boards from one side only minimising damage.
You may then be able to use cut boards on one end minimising wastage. Screw at 200mm spacing .
