Removing stains from oak table

The new oak coffee table hasn't survived a Christmas visit from the family, and is covered in stains of unknown origin.

The table has an 'unfinished' look though I expect it had been finished with something, but I'm looking for advice on how to remove these stains.

It truly looks infinished but probably there's some sort of thin coat of something on it.
I would personally give it a quick sanding with 180 grit paper and then 2 coats of hardwax oil satin.
Try under the table first to see the results.
End result should look almost like unfinished but will be totally waterproof (not to be used at the bottom of a pool though...)
To remove those stains you could try methyl spirit or just leave them to fade naturally (they will fade).
