I once had a dog in the past, and he used to open doors by biting the edge and pulling them open, he was surprisingly good at this

Unfortunately this has left my bedroom door in quite a mess, and i'm wondering how or if i might repair it

Replacing the door entirely is a bit out of my budget at the moment.
I do have fibreglass mesh tape though, and some experience filling holes in plaster, i'm wondering if the same approach could work here, rebuilding it with wood filler somehow, is this a reasonable possibility?

how should this be done

That's a-good stuff - i used it on a similarly dog-chewed door and it worked a treat. Had to paint over the finish, though, since the patch didn't really match.
