Might be the aga with a glass lined ? heat exchanger, I remember reading about them before on here, if it is the cylinder will be a direct on gravity.

Every day a school day. I met a consultant that listened today (well yesterday, but he phoned today to say thanks) that actually listened to advice.

Could well be a direct on gravity - how do I work that out? Please...

You'll need to replace the cylinder with a Gravity Indirect Coil Cylinder. 1" Gravity Tappings, I normally purchase RM Cylinder ones from my supplier.

Very important. I suggest you get an installer in. As the job is not as straightforward as you thought.

Agreed that the job is not as straightforward as I thought, but very glad I posted here otherwise the installer would not only have cost me money but probably a great deal of stress as well! Someone is going to get a piece of my mind in the morning!!!

Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread.

So have you already got someone in to replace this cylinder?

Nope. The piece of my mind will be directed to me. Bearing in mind I need to put a flue liner in before I can get hot water again, the whole set up is now being redesigned.

The sad part is that I explained all of this to a couple of installers/plumbers a few months back and they tried to reassure me it was a straightforward swap out...
