Replacement of water pump

Hi Fixitflav,

I have taken the head off and rotated it but can't fit it until Saturday. Another question for you, here is a picture of the pump, any idea what that gate value below on the right is for? A.plumber said a few years ago that it should be nearly closed. Cheers

My guess is it's a bypass, going direct to the boiler return, to ensure a minimum flow through the boiler if the 2 auto valves are closed. That would be consistent with it being nearly closed.
