Hi, just a bit of confirmation needed!

I recently moved into a rented flat. When I viewed the flat, I noticed a phone socket attached but dangling out of the wall. When I moved in 3 weeks later the socket has gone! I am now paying for a phone line and internet that I can not use. I have got onto the landlord to replace it but he says they cant.

I have done some searching online and found that it is illegal to remove or replace a master phone socket. Is this correct? Will I have to get my provider out to put a new one on?

Any help would be appreciated.

Was the line included in the rent? I doubt it , but you never know.
BT will charge for this most likely.

no the line is not in the rent.

Is it illegal to replace it myself? Will an electrician do it for me or does it have to be BT?

I dont understand how your paying for a line you cannot use.

Have BT activated the line?
How did they test it if so?

If you are paying line rental to BT (or other service provider) then they are responsible to maintain the service to the NTE 5 ( or other network terminal connection ) So contact them on billing and say that as there is no socket you have no service and therefore you are requesting a refund ( or deduction ) of the line rental until the NTE 5 is fitted. Tell them that when you signed up for service there was a master socket loose on the cable end so you assumed phone service was available. Make it very clear that between signing up and moving in someone else had removed the master socket that you had seen.

You probably won't get far with the first level call taker as this scenario will not be programed into his or her list of questions and anwers on the screen. So politely explain it is not a normal situation and please can she extend your call to the manager one level up.

ROFL, how is he going to tell what wires to connect?
It could be any of the ( shall we say 4 pairs) wires.
My last house was on the last pair of a 12 core IIRC.

Just ram every pair in I suppose until it get s a dial tone :D
This is assuming the line is enabled and even if not is there voltage present :D
