Replacing a sliding dimmer on a floor lamp

Hi P.E, thanks for reply, so its plug, inline dimmer, then the transformer?

Since no-one else has pointed it out, that dimmer specifies that it is not suitable for use with electronic transformers.

That's a very good point BS3036. I should have read what it said in the description beyond where is says it can be used for low voltage lights. It has to be a wire wound transformer and I cannot immediately see a suitable transformer to use as the first 2 of these might work but not be good/safe for on the floor. http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Main_Index/Lighting_Menu_Index/Lighting_Transformers/

Rethink time or get the Italian made dimmer/transformer that Mr Resistor said they could get in. I E-mailed them suggesting they get a stock of JN3060Fs !

For the lash up solution, with suitable parts, it would be 230v plug, dimmer, transformer, lamp.

there for I suggest you bin it and buy a proper light.
I suggest you take it back to Argos and ask for a refund.

And don't take any guff about "it's out of guarantee" - guarantees do not replace your statutory rights, and a light that fails after a year was clearly not of merchantable quality.

I expect that as it's been over a year since the problem was posted here it's been sorted one way or another.

I was led to this post by a google search for the part number, not by searching the forum

As it appears to be a fairly common problem felt it would be useful to post the link even thought the price is high.

I too have a similar floor standing light bought from John Lewis, but John Lewis, being John Lewis have a company set up to supply spares to us folks.
The 20-60VA transformer has an integrated dimmer, and is available in clear plastic of black. Ring Poole Lighting 0n 01202 690945 and ask for the transformer which is part of Mystique Floorlamp. Part number KFT-6022 price £15 including vat and delivery. This is a 20-60VA transformer with integrated dimmer, and is designed to sit on the floor next to the lamp. There is a slider on it to change the lighting level. The o/p voltage is 11.4 Vac. The full spec and picture can be downloaded from :- http://www.kaoyi.it/Catalogo/tabid/57/Articoli/View/ArtID/29/Default.aspx

This page is in Italian, but Google can translate it, and there is a pdf with the full spec available.

Posts on this subject are a bit old now, but should anyone else be looking (as I was), here's the solution.
