Replacing failed Danfoss 103 timer

No you cant fit a room stat without fitting zone valves makeing the system either S or Y plan, currently your HW and CH temperature are controlled by the boilers own thermostat, you say you are hoping to move in a year, you would be well advised to have the system updated if you are trying to sell, the system you have is very outdated

Thanks for your advice again Ian. Just for my understanding, what is the reason that I can't add a room stat without zone valves?

I understand that the HW won't come on if the room temp is above the limit set on the room stat. Agree this is not ideal, but we usually have immersion timed to come on when the weather is warmer anyway. Of course, the immersion heater has a thermostat, so it will not come on if the HW is already heated to desired temp.

The way I have been thinking about it is that the stat would just switch the boiler on and off based on room temperature, which is something we have been doing manually anyway, so I'm thinking it won't really change a great deal. Am I overlooking or misunderstanding something?

I agree that my system is now out of date and would benefit from updating, but it has been working fine for our needs since we moved in 15 years ago, without any issues (tempting fate there!) and unfortunately taking carpet and floorboards up, is not an option for us at the moment.

That sort of thing will be a direct plugin replacement for your old 103, but they don't come with a room stat.

that is what i changed my mums 103 timer to, works well and very easily replaced

You can do anything you want, it is completely wrong, but if you are happy with it who is to argue, be aware though when you sell the house , expect a very large bill when the buyer discovers what you have done

I'm not disagreeing - I'm just trying to establish the reason why it would be completely wrong to add a room stat.

We now have remote sytems that you can control from anywhere in the world , using a smart phone and can tell if you are at home , and can tell the outside temperature and modulate the boiler accordingly, and you want to control your HW with a room thermostat , do as you please its your house

i was advised not to have a room stat either, we just control the radiators with the TRVs

Think it was because of the position of it and it was in our hall/stairwell and the big lockshielded radiator being not too far from it, i just took the installers advice

But you are in Scotland, the rules for England and Wales are different
