I am replacing my router soon but the thought of doing this is putting me off as when the original one was installed it was a nightmare, a only worked after calling broadband supplier a few times. Should replacing a router be easy or not any advice would be gratefully received . thanks.

A few details would help.
Why are you replacing the router?
Are you changing ISP, if so, from whom to who?
Are you wired or wirelessly connected to the router?
Which make and model of router are you going to use?
What is your operating system, XP, Vista or Win7?

Then we can offer some suggestions.

And generally new routers are usually installed without much pain these days.

sorry for lack of details, the old router is a netgear and the new one is a d-link , the isp is the same, aol , the only real reason is that i have been getting poor reception to my playstation 3 when the computer is on, AOL recently changed my contract and sent another router i thought a new router might improve the reception around house. But i had real problems getting the playstation to connect and had to change the security on the router set up to get it to connect.

I am a bit worried i might have the same probs if i install a new router. Thanks for replies.

Try changing the transmission channel. Worked wonders for mine. Though I had to phone O2's (free) helpdesk to discover how to do it

Oh, and get a decent ISP. AOL - the internet for people who dont know any better (though it might be better these days, back in the dial-up era, they forced everyone to use their browser and IM service and email service, and the internet you got through their browser was watered down)

For a better idea of what's available in your area try http://www.samknows.com and check the LLU providers on your exchange (if you have any) that will be able to provide you with an ADSL2 connection. Based on recommendations from multiple people I would suggest Be or O2 (essentially they are the same provider, both use the same LLU network) if they provide a service in your area.

Failing that if you aren't in a ADSL2 area then you could try any number of Entanet resellers, they provide a decent service at a reasonable price. I'm currently with ADSL24 and I don't have any major complaints.

You're quite right, although the wording is a little confused. Amended.
