He did it for the cheap publicity, otherwise he would have done it without telling the world.

Let's face it, for Branson to give 100K is like you or me giving nothing.

If the Lottery winner that won £35 million earns £21,000 interest a week - then what would Branson's £1,250 million earn him a week?
Let's face it - he gave away money that he would never use in a thousand lifetimes.

the man can't do rigth for doing wrong, he could have kept he's money but by him offering to help, people take notice, for if the mcCann's did what the papers imply then branson and his virgin empire would be label baby killer supporters, by those who dont like people with dosh.
but i suppose he deserves all he gets the rich so and so, keep your dosh, no one wants a rich -mans help, do they, publicity seeking shi#: shock:

Why didn't he donate it anonymously? It's not even loose change when you are a billionaire. It's money he would never spend - so where's the 'good' in that?

He donated it with a view to encourage others to donate - so one would obviously expect it to be public, wouldn't one?. Also, by making it public, he is publicly offering the McCanns some much needed moral support. If you think how much damage this could cause his reputation if it turns out he is backing the wrong horse, you would then see that this is a massive gesture. Also, why should a donation only seen to be worthy if the donater would 'feel' it missing? Branson would have to have to donate millions if you followed that strange logic.

It's money he will never spend or need. It's monopoly money. If a kid gives his pocket money to charity then that is a bigger gesture than a rich man giving money that he could never spend in a million life times. It's just a publicity gimmick. If he really cared he would cover their legal costs anonymously, or kick-start the fund as a magnanimous benefactor that preferred to remain anonymous. It's cheap advertising. Very cheap. Almost tacky really.

joe - the point others are making is that he is trying to encourage others to do the same - that cannot be achieved anonymously.

Why not?

"An anonymous tycoon has donated £100K to start a fund to fill the pockets of fat-cat lawyers working for the McCanns. Other tycoons are invited to join".

That should do it eh?

All the McCanns are doing is alienating the general public by making it look like they've got something to hide and are using high powered lawyers to get off the hook. Besides, Kate McCann would use that on new outfits in a month.

So as everyone is slowly distancing thier support from potential child killers - Richards latest 'tacky' stunt is to contribute towards their legal costs?? Yeah! Way to go Richard!! No one will see past this desparate stunt to add to your billions and public adoration. I'll look out for any future child killer suspects for you to support.

Boy, that billionaire Richard sure has a knack of getting cheap advertising doesnt he?

The Sunday Times stated that his wealth is calculated at £3.065 billion.

Take £100K out of that and tell me if he'd miss it?

So?? Why are you obsessing over his wealth? Do you resent rich people or something? Reading your replies, it seems you do. It's not all about money. Putting his name to their support is probably just what they need at this time - I think that's an incredibly brave and unselfish thing to do. But what the point in discussing this anymore?? You cant see no further than pound signs.

£100K is not even loose change. If he wants to help - rather than gain cheap publicity - he can transfer money directly to their lawyers.

Simple enough isn't it ? (even for you)

If cynicism is directly proportional to age Joe you must be at least 200 years old ... Give the guy a break.

True, he could have donated anonymously but at least he donated which I'm sure the McCann's appreciated.

Far better than blowing it on another hot air balloon adventure ;)

hay joe i gave them nowt but i will give them my support, iam not short of a bob or two ,but it sound like to me you think branson should do what the queen paul macca, sir alan suger and all those who gave all there dosh to some poor suffering sod  i say good on you sir richard dont let the bad mouthers stop you giving to who ever you want guys like me and others just sit by and count our dosh, butsome can give it large in the bullshi# dept ;)
