Just a quickie, I taught myself how to frame Gable, equal pitched hipped roof, dormer roofs etc out of a book. I now find myself at a stumbling block with the more complex roofs and am wondering whether I should try and learn trigonometry or buy another roof framing book to learn as much as I can. Does anyone know of any good Roof Framing books that will help me leatn more complex roofing, or should I go down the trigonmetry root? Thank you very much in advance

I have used trig from day one and it has helped enormously.

Having the maths to prove you are doing it right is a huge help. You can work out all the necessary triangular dimensions on paper before you even cut a rafter.

It is not all straight forward however. For instance, the triangle created by measuring across the wall plates needs to take into account that the rafter will be birds-mouthed and that any measurements along that rafter need to be measured from the crook of that birdsmouth.

In my opinion it is better to have the maths and not need it rather than need the maths and not have it. There are plenty of times you can cut a roof without it.

Thank you Noseall, I will learn trigonometry it seems like a wise direction to go. Cheers for now.
