Have they put another joists on top of existing ceiling joists or a bigger joists on the side of the existing ceiling joists.
 
Just spoke to one of the workmen who carried out the work on my loft flooring. He says they put the joists over the main supporting "kingpin" beam. Hope this helps. Means nothing to me. :)

If i'm not mistaking they mean tie beam which the king post sits on, if thats the case what is the other end sitting on.
 
As markie has mentioned, the kingpost normally resting on the beam and the kingpin is the pin like mortice and tenon in the beam of the king post.

The only real way of knowing is a photo or lift one of the floorboard to check because I wouldn't take anybody word for it.
