Hi all,

While I await my structural engineer to be back in the office - just wanting to gauge some opinions on an issue I'm facing.

I'm having a cranked beam installed alongside the party well on the 1st floor to support two chimney stacks (in the middle the beam is resting on a load bearing will separating the front and back rooms).

On the back of the property, the wall is smaller, thus the steel beam was originally meant to rest on 100m simple brick work bearing from the engineer, but we have uncovered that a wooden lintel is taking most of that on the wall. (Note the cranked beam has a 150 x 100 x 12mm base plate)

This lintel is above a bay window, supporting the roof

What are my options here, I know resting an RSJ on a wooden lintel is frowned upon, but potentially possible?

Some approaches the builder has mentioned:
- Add a steel plate on top of the wooden lintel to spread the load (unsure how this helps much)
- Reduce the bearing of the wooden lintel since the load is not as great (lintel only running the span of 1 room)
- Replace with a concrete/steel lintel

I will defo get the SE to check, but looking for some outside of the box options which can help the builder progress
