Hi,
I am currently doing some of the prep work for my dormer extension and am fitting some steel work,on the working drawing it says "universal beam with s/w plate bolted to to top flange.

I assumed that this would be a length of timber fixed to the ub to allow fixing of the uprights for front dormer wall,am I correct?
And any idea of spacing between bolts please fixing it,the beam is 152x89x16kg?

600mm centres staggered either side of the flange.

Probably.

This is of no use if the steel beam is only two foot long though.

Thanks Noseall,I know Im a pain but what size bolts.Im using m12s in the plates joining the beams together so m8...m10?

We usually hilti nail these.

The fixings are only really to resist some sideways force from the rafters, so they don't have to be substantial, but should be close enough apart - eg 400-600mm centres - eg the no more than the rafter spacing
