Hi

My fathers property in cumbria was partially flooded in his basemnet and united utilities have turned the electrics off to the whole row of houses and are going round removing all the company fuses. They have said that they will not reconnect anyone until the electrics have been certified as safe by an electrician (which I understand).

However because of the way the property is wired from the basement only the company fuse meter and the economy 7 time switch got wet as well as a short length of the metre tails. All our side of the service head (The consumer unit and all the wiring and sockets remained dry), and the electricity never went off during the flood despite the wet meter.

Will I need to get a full wiring certificate for the whole house or can electricans issue a check sheet to say that the system is safe to re-connect, (as basically nothing happened to it on our side of the metre).

Not sure what they will want, I'd suggest for precision you discuss this direct with the operator and if insured, pass the task over to the insurance company.

You could always send photo's to prove that your installation is no worst than before the floods and see what they say. It could well be that property wasn't as flooded as others, and they looked at the worst in the street and tagged all properties the same.

Hi Mattyf

They will want to see a periodic inspection report I suspect, not a big job.
There is a very good chance I will be going upto Cockermouth very soon from Nottingham to check a friends electrical installation over, perhaps I could be of service whilst there

You should check their requirements - They might want to see a PIR, but if the extent of flooding can be shown/recorded, it might be quite cheap to get it done.

extent and limitation of inspection:- 'area of house subjected to flooding'
along with a visual inspection an an IR test for the entire installation.
