When I was in Aus. I worked for a company subcontracting for BP.

I had to wear steal toe caps long trousers, long sleeved shirts and a hard hat.

More about covering their ars than concirned for my health in 36 C sub tropical heat

A few years ago at least two track workers were taken to hospital with heat related conditions during replacement of tracks just outside the village. They were wearing full high visibilty jackets and trousers on one the hottest days. It was impossible for a train to have got anywhere near them as the tracks had been taken up. They were shovelling ballast. Palletts of bottled water were eventually brought to site.

Never been able to wear steel toe caps , don’t do my size .

Surely the track should have been closed at the previous junction or if it were still in use you would think there should be all sorts of procedures in place. Surely not just ‘if you hear a train, jump out of the way’.

I thought railway track workers carried legally held explosive bangers which made a helluva bang if a train ran over them. Did I make that up?

IIRC the maroons are used in foggy conditions, when the workers cannot reasonably be expected to see an approaching train in good time.

They are put behind a train which is stopped, as a last ditch attempt to stop another running into it.

They had a lookout, who survived. The story suggests they were wearing ear defenders and perhaps could not hear the warnings of the lookout. So there hearing was well looked after???

In this day and age workers don't have an earpiece alarm (perhaps with a vibrating alert too)...I find it hard to believe they only rely on lookouts.

I'm not a trusting of any one else type, I would find it impossible to rely on a lookout or anyone else for my immediate safety.

Neither would I like the job of a lookout, entrusted with the lives of others. A moments inattention, a phone ringing or etc..
