Our Samsung WD80N645OOW has stopped draining. It makes some gurgling noises and sounds unhealthy. The assumption is the drain pump has gone, however, it's a 2-pump unit, drain pump and circulation pump.

The question is, despite looking different, do the pumps technically differ? Are they interchangeable? My understanding is one is a Drain pump, and one is a Circulation pump. Looking at them, they physically differ, but spec wise, they seem to be the same/similar. As if not, I'm finding it awfully tricky to find the right bits. Searching "drain pump" reveals images of what I think, according to this video is actually the circulation pump;

When searching for the components, I see many many results. Is it simply a case of the images on these sites being inaccurate, and going largely by spec, or, is it a case of Samsung using two different brands of pumps (Askoll and Wuxi Haoli in my unit?) as a way of balancing the load, in case one model fails quicker than the other?

This for example, is the complete unit. £120, Two pumps and drain body. Whereas a single pump can be found for £10-60 depending on whether you shop at AliExpress or "PartsCenter" etc...

On the basis they seemingly sell "universal pumps", I'm hopeful, colours aside, it's a case of one pump will do either job, or the difference in size/shape, is just due to the different brands. Given the time of year, I don't want to be waiting on a part to arrive, and then find I need to order another.

Before you order anything you need to remove the pump and check for blockages in the pump housing and if the motor impellar turns or is seized up with debris or foreign bodies. If you establish you need a new pump then e-spares are a good supplier https://www.espares.co.uk/product/es1955283/electruepart-washing-machine-drain-pump-assem It is quite possible the drain and circulation use the same pumps but probably different housings for different hose fittings.

I’ve dismantled everything, the fans are moving freely by hand on both pumps and no blockages or restrictions.

There was a lot of funk in the drain hose, but I’m not sure enough to prevent drain off…

I have ordered a part and will see how it goes.

Whilst I’ve torn it all apart I’ve given it a bit of a service, cleaning out the dryer flow pipes and filters etc…

The drain and circulation pumps in your Samsung WD80N645OOW are designed for different tasks, and while they may appear similar, they are typically not interchangeable. Even though some components may have similar specifications, the pumps serve distinct functions—drain pumps expel water, while circulation pumps move water within the drum for washing. The difference in size and appearance is likely due to the manufacturers (Askoll vs. Wuxi Haoli), and using the wrong pump could affect performance. It's best to order the correct replacement pump based on the specific model rather than relying on "universal" parts, to avoid further complications.

I fully agree, the beauty, usually of a DIY repair is that you tear the item down, read off the part number and order a new one like for like. Except that every search result online ONLY brings hits back for what appears to be the circulation pump.

Searching for “circulation pump” yields nothing. Searching for “drain pump”, brings back results, that look like the circ pump.

The circ pump has identifiable part numbers such as DC31-00181A and identifies as Wuxi Haoli, yet the drain pump, doesn’t reveal much, other than an Askoll S2031, which doesn’t return much online…

So I’ve been left wondering if it’s the sites showing bad images, or that the pump I really need is like rocking horse ‘drainage’.

I guess I won’t know until the part lands now…
