Sat Nav

I have a Garmin Nuvi, strange how it lost its memory just after the guarantee expired, cost 60 quid to have it put right.
Compared to Tom Tom it gives more time before you reach turnings, Tom Tom's sometimes tell you too late.

I have a Garmin Nuvi the only gripe is with it you have to pay or are supposed to pay for updates on speed camera's etc.

I got a new nuvi recently since the fixed-price repair for the old one was comparable to buying a new one outright from argos (in my case cashing in points from using my MBNA card - its was our little treat!).

Does anyone know if you can download maps suitable for off-road cyling trips since I quite like using NCN trails such as the transpennine as basic rutes from which I may veer for points of interest.

Not sure about being able to do that with a dedicated Sat Nav but android phones have a range of 'trail' maps and tracking apps and a lot are free.

That would assume that I have an android phone of course

One would have thought that any sat nav has a global postioning facility which simply needs to be matched up with a downloaded map. Surely someine must have developed such a compatable download? It would be cheaper that a dedicated bicycle computer which has a load of other unnecessary nonsense such as heart monitors and calory burnt calculator. I'd happily pay a reasonable price for it.

You could get yourself a half decent Smart Phone and get a Sat Nav app. TomTom has always been a decent app on my Windows phone but it's way out of date now. Some of the Android phones have excellent Sat Nav apps. However, you say you don't do gadgets so maybe a dedicated device would be more beneficial. Either way, they are excellent devices.

same here, I've been using tomtom for the last three yrs on my windows smart phone with no real probs at all and you can update the maps via "mapshare"

You can purchase an Android phone fairly cheaply cant. And if you're only using the phone's GPS, there would be no need for a sim card. However, some Sat Nav/Trail apps do require a data connection so you need to consider that if you're also purchasing apps but as I say, there are plenty of free ones.

An example of a fairly cheap but decent Android phone would be a Orange San Francisco. It can be had for £119 (I've just moved on from this phone actually). http://shop.orange.co.uk/mobile-phones/san-francisco-from-orange-in-white

Apps can be downloaded on the phone via the market. https://market.android.com/search?q=cycle+tracker&so=1&c=apps

Not my bag but iPhone do similar apps too.

Anyway, was just an idea. I know there are a lot of people out there using these apps to plan their rides and then track their progress following the ride.

EDIT: Just seen this but it's pricey. Has decent reviews though.
