Scalemaster Leak on new Vaillant combi installation

Sponsored Links
New metal scalemaster installed and all seems to be OK.

On removal of the green pushfit one we saw what we think contributed to the pinholes. The back of the scalemaster was quite charred. I guess from when the fitter was working with the blowtorch on the adjacent pipes. There is clearly a sign on the scalemaster that says keep away from flames!

I do have to say that I have not heard of the plastic body magnetic units "pinholing" but I do not fit plastic components on mains water unless its totally unavoidable as in plastic boilers.

I would only use the metal bodied units.

The magnetic units can give some scare reduction effect and are recommended by Vaillant. Generally there is no need for them except in very hard water areas. Vaillant do NOT recommend the use of the polyphosphate scale reducers and say that may invalidate some warranty aspects.

It is worth checking with the manufacturer, you say that the unit is directly below the boiler, it should be positioned 1 meter away from the boiler and great care should be taken not to allow any flux to get into the unit, heat transfer could be the culprit that caused the leak, not the unit, check with your plumber

For your first post you have managed to reply to something three years old!
