I'm looking for one of those old metal school compasses. The ones that have a screw thing on one side to hold a pencil, and a straight metal point on the other. You used to get them in Helix geometry sets in the '60s, along with some similar dividers. I've tried everywhere, but those they make now are plastic, or have safety points, or anything other than the required straight steel point.

I use them for marking tiles, skirtings, and things like that, around mouldings and odd shapes. My trusty old 1960 ones have now broken :(
Can anyone help?

No - it doesn't have a straight point. It has a sort of knuckle which hold a little needle point. That's no good at all. It must have straight point.

Got mine from Woolies about a year ago, straight point n all. Came with a plastic protractor and ruler.

Usefull tool too

You will have trouble finding them, because namby pamby hoity toity nanny state schools wont allow metal stuff anymore, because they can be used as weapons. Plastic ones break before any real harm is done. Metal doesn't. Though I think if i were setting out to injure someone at school I'd be a little more creative.

This any good?

You may say "namby-pamby", but I was stuck up the arse with one of the old style compasses (with a very long point). Ouch, I can tell you.

At least securespark understands what I want. His a**e bears witness to that. There's one going on eBay for a couple of quid, but everytime I increase my bid by 20p, so does someone else, so he can stick it up his a**e (literally). Surely, these things are not valuable?

I've been after one for ages too, perfect for scribing, as you say. We used to use them at school (early 90's)
I'll get on eBay and add my 20p worth ;)

You do not want the 'safety compass' type.

Ever tried a cheap as chips PVC coated, lead/steel core, flexible curve?
