Has anyone ever been a school governor ?

How involved was it ? How rewarding was it ? Would you recommend it ?

I was prepared to become one until I was told by my sister who was a governor just how much work was involved, quite a lot as it turned out, but she did say it was rewarding. I think you need to consider what is going to be expected of you in terms of time commitment and see how it fits in with your life. I'd imagine the amount of commitment varies from school to school, on the satisfaction front though I've know a few school governors and all of them have said it was a very rewarding experience.

So In summary, if you've got the time (with 3 kids.... yeah right) and it fits in with your lifestyle, go for it, all I'd say is be sure first that you can give the role the commitment it so deserves, best of luck.

When I was a lad, my father was a school governor at the primary school that I was at. The first time he went there he sat next to all the teachers and the deputy headmistress asked him who he was and after he said who he was she said 'for all I know you might be an imposter!'
(and the headmaster told her off for it)

Well, some news.

I read up on it a bit, was still interested, and applied. As it turned out, I was the only parent that could be a*sed, so I'm in. I've now got all my paperwork and it does appear to be very involved, but I'm going to give it my best shot.

Wish me luck, chaps.........

I always thought his beard looked a bit tickly anyway......

Thanks for the encouraging posts - I'm off to do some more reading now (as there is an awful lot of it).

My father became a governer at our local primary school whilst me and my two siblings were a pupils there.

15 years later he is still on the governing body as a non parent governer, so it can't be that bad!

It does need commitment, but doesn't take over your life.

Unfortunaly he is on holiday (again) so I can't ask him about it, but I will try to find out more when he returns, and let you know.
