Why do we bother, we don't grow anything, we don't make anything. Why do we want to teach our kids such out of date stuff, surely ditch maths, physics chemistry etc and concentrate on media studies, business studies etc, surely far more worth to society.

eddie, without maths the world would grind to a halt. think about it ...

No it won't, I have a 1st year degree in maths.

then you will understand the everyday uses of maths as well as the thousands of times advanced maths are used in all applications, just as in the binary maths your computer is founded on.

Oh fully, hence my original post

Ok, apart from being able to add up why do we need maths (you could learn it at 5)? physics /chemistry. come on why ???

eddie , to be able to live or exist, we just need food, shelter and somewhere to.....erm.... procreate. in order to exist in the 21st century, and enjoy the benefits of modern living im afraid we need to rely on a little bit more than media studies for f***s sake!!!

It all comes from another country, pre packaged premade, so what?

what are you saying eddie,........no one in the uk is innovative?....that theres no r&d going on in this country?.......no scientists making breakthroughs.......? i agree, manufacture has took a pounding, but the u.k. is respected the world over for our innovations, its just that the u.s.a has the dollars to put our ideas into practice.

Eddie, mate, I'm afraid I'm on nose's side.

My 6 yo is fascinated by all aspects of the world around him: animals, nature programs, science, gravity, magnetism, cookery, maths human biology. etc etc etc. He can name all the major bones in his body - how many other people can do that?

He is just a sponge at the moment, loving everything we throw at him, soaking it up and coming back for more. Who are we to deny him that?

He even knows that Blue Whale Poo is pink......bet you didn't!

Sometimes he absolutely amazes me with the stuff he comes out with - stuff that we haven't taught him , but he has read in a book or seen on TV.

Incredible!

I feel very strongly that out of this insatiable curiosity that most kids have comes a scientist, a doctor, a chef, an inventor, a designer etc etc...

And I'm sure you have to agree with me that is a good thing?

Does that mean you didn't complete the degree course - normally a 3 year course for a BSc?

i hated maths and the sciences at school, yet i have used them all in the careers i have had, many without realising it, to the point where i understand them now and can explain them to my children. It was intresting to see science teachers on the news yesterday saying they want to bring the fun back in the classroom and do more of the experiments rather than the text book curriculum stuff they have to splurge out as the government says so.

As for us not producing or growing anything, well perhaps youre right maybe business studies would be a good option for you eddie!

guys my text was supposed to be provocative. I don't see that science / maths is regarded with the due respect it deserves. Simon, I am delighted that your kids have an interest in the world around them. Oh BTW, no I didn't get a degree in maths, but one in chemistry, you have to have 1st year degree maths to get one of these.

To clarify, you need a little above A' level maths to get a degree in chemistry.

Oh, my god no!! I'm happy, if possibly in the minority.
