Seatbelt Extenders for Child Seats

Yes that's right, lap restraint across the seat with the large belt wrapping around the back. Honestly we've really tried with it with all the logical ways and there's nothing we can do to get it to fit. The buckles in my car are recessed within the seat whereas on other cars they've been free on the seats in the back -- this would make a difference.

I suppose it depends how far the back of the seat extends outwards. It touches the back of the passenger seat which I don't imagine the belly of a 25 st. person would do, but of course they would be wider than the seat is deep. I don't know why it seems such an awkward seat but it is!
What brand /model is it?

It's a Joie "Stages".

So are you saying the Lap belt does not reach across ? ( the first action when fitting the seat). This is usually only 4-500mm .

That does look like quite a big one! If you still have the owner's manual for the car, the manufacturer is legally obliged to state which seats are suitable for a child seat, and they have to specify at least one brand of child seat that is compatible with the car (which will probably be French)! Incidentally, does your 406 have ISOFIX anchorages? It might be too old, but I think some French cars were among the first to start providing them.

The 406 has isofix, though not all seats are isofix, I have to say I never considered anything other than an isofix seat when my sprogs were that age but then I'd also not lug them around in a 406.

They were just starting to come out as our last sprog grew out of a rear-facing seat. They are quite a bit better than the ones that strap in with the belt, especially the later ones with a top tether, but by the time either Mrs Avocet or myself had cars with top tether anchorages, the kids were all out of their child seats. We did wonder about getting an ISOFIX one for the last sprog, but they were bloody expensive, so we reckoned it would just be cheaper to get another kid, if the worst happened... ;)

Some models did (can't remember which), but not all did, and this was the case for the entirety of the 406's production run (1995-2004). My trim level is the "Rapier" which does not have Isofix. The car was made in 2001 by which time it was fitted on most new cars. Anyway... why wouldn't you take them round in a 406?

My wife drives the new Ford Focus and although it has Isofix, the seat she uses does not utilise the system. As long as it is a good quality seat fixed properly to the car seat, that is our only concern. It being Isofix wasn't ever recommended as a 'standard' when we were shopping.

As an aside - just what is the legal position about having rear facing child seats on the front seat of a car?
Reason I ask is a neighbour insists they are illegal.

They're not illegal, provided you have the airbag (if fitted) disabled, then you can have them in the front. It's covered here: https://www.gov.uk/child-car-seats-the-rules

I only had him in the front a handful of times, and the airbag was always disabled. He's in the back now.

No, they're not illegal. That's why you can turn off the front passenger airbag. In fact, with some fancy cars, if you buy their own brand child seat, it has a transponder in it that turns off the relevant airbga(s) automatically, when fitted.
