Thanks for the prompt response. Just checking that I've not completely missed the point here!
If I have a light switch currently with a single cable as described above (no permanent live), would this be a suitable replacement?

With the pneumatic switches: I think my lighting is looped at the ceiling rose and hence, just a single cable is at the switch: Live, switched live and earth. Is that okay? I wasn’t sure if it needed permanent live.
As EFLI said, you have a permanent live.

What you don't have is a neutral - many electronic switches need one, and of those that don't I don't think there are any which work OK with LED or fluorescent lamps.
