Sewer Manhole

We have sections of sewer that are known to be problematic, so are on a planned maintenance programme.

Some are jetted periodically, others are flushed, which is simply a case of lifting a manhole cover, dropping a 4" pipe in off the back of a Tanker and *******ing a load of water down.
That's more or less what I do (without the tanker!) I have a water butt nearby and lob a few buckets down every few weeks. What I find odd is that after 20 years of this it is definitely worse recently. After the drain bloke jetted it and I had seen it looking really good on his camera screen, yet less than a week later was semi-blocked again. I didn't have to use the rods but it took a few forceful buckets before it was back to clear water running. I have told my wife it's all her fault, she is obviously producing bigger turds!

I remember hearing a drainage specialist on the Jeremy Vine show talking about blocked drains. He reckoned that apart from an aging sewerage system and the dreaded wet wipes, a lot of the problem is these water saving toilets not giving a good old flush.

I’ve I’ve just read the whole of this thread….no idea why, but all I can say is it’s taken me on a bit of a journey from how to avoid a blocked bog to how to relieve a squashed finger nail and back again.:LOL:

In fairness the Victorian Sewer system is on the whole, still fit for purpose, it was so over engineered in the first place. The biggest issues are Population growth, higher rainfall, and abuse of the system. Having seen some of the excuses for drainage thrown together by the House Bashing Crews these days, I have to wonder what the life of an Unblock Specialist is going to be like in a few years time.

No fan of Jeremy Whine, but for once someone speaking sense on his show, and I have to agree on the new Bogs. When you remove an old Pan with High Level, 2 Gallon flush, with a flush that was essentially a Tsunami capable of washing even the biggest Richards into oblivion, and replace it with a 6 litre, close coupled WC that has the flushing power of a kids watering can, then Folks wonder why they have problems.

Lol, no more squashed fingernails from me!
