Sorry for long delay in reply. Wanted to provide an outcome as that oftne does not happen!
I tried as Colin suggested and nipping them with pliers but it did not work, they were already making good connection.
In the end I bought 2 new adapters, different types and brands and both worked.
Cannot explain how both my older adapaters worked fine in the previous 3 properties I lived in, and just before moving, and then suddenly moving to this house they both didn't work. Absolute mystery!
