When did they change shaver plugs from 4mm to 5mm pins !!

4mm won’t make connection in a 1960s shaver light!
(Yeah I know it don’t have an isolation txr)

In fact it’s a rather loose connection in a modern light and I can understand why now!!

UK shaver plug or foreign shyte Euro plug ?
They may look similar but they are not the same.

Pin sizes have not changed.

Interesting, I wonder what an "energy efficient smart plug" is? It looks like a

UK Consumer Protection legislation requires that most domestic electrical goods sold must be provided with fitted plugs to BS 1363-1. The exception is that shavers, electric toothbrushes and similar personal hygiene products may be supplied with a Europlug as an alternative to the BS 4573 shaver plug. Most 2-pin UK shaver sockets will accept either BS 4573 plugs or Europlugs but are rated for a maximum of 0.2 A.
So it would seem very little redress, I have not looked into the regulations that carefully my copy is rather old BS7671:2008 the MK shaver socket without a transformer has a current limiting device, it not allowed to be used in bathrooms, but does have a limit of 200 mA. And states it will work with either UK or Euro plugs. I thought other than with an isolation transformer so giving an IT supply that ALL sockets in UK must be non reversible and have an earth.

So not sure if the MK K700RPWHI actually complies with UK regulations? The B&Q advert says "BS4573" which as far as I can tell means limited to 200 mA and has to have the sign showing a man shaving. The shaver socket has same pin spacing as a 5 A plug specified in the obsolete BS 372:1930 part 1, may seem daft, but you can fit a 5A 3 pin socket to plug old two pin shaver plugs into but not a two pin socket.

There are some really dangerous things sold, daft think is you can sell them, but other than a 3 pin socket where you only use two, I can't find any sockets that will not take both plugs, I think the price tag of £23 is silly for a non transformer shaver socket, but if only a single socket back box, then not much option.

The dimensions of the top plug seem to be a perfect match for the original 5A plug BS72 which became BS273 (or is it BS73 which became BS272). IIRC 0.2" diameter x 5/8" spacing.
Standard 16A Schuko is 19mm X 4.8mm, the 2.5A version does have the converging pins to enable it to be more stable in the 16A socket.

Anyone know where I can get outlets to suit 4mm pins ?

Thanks :D
Calais, Berlin, Amsterdam and lots of other places. Or buy a shaver socket more locally.

I cannot understand why shavers sold in the UK have the unique UK 2 pin plug yet claim they can be used worldwide. Much better to fit the Europlug which will fit much of the world and UK shaver sockets.

I've had a Philishave and a Braun for at least 16 years which have Europlugs and so does the Mrs lady shave since before we met in 1992.

Until the recent threads on here I really thought they had become standard for shavers and tooth brushes.

I've even fitted shaver sockets which don't accept 5A plugs.

Hi BTTT

Got several of these brawn shavers now with 4mm pins.

Anyone know where I can get outlets to suit 4mm pins ?

Thanks :D

Need to put one of these in my bathroom then :sneaky:

I assume the first link is more suited to 5mm pins.

I’ve got some of the second. I’ll have to try them

Plot twist. Which I had re-read this.

I purchased a dual french outlet (contactum brand, intended for motor homes), with the intention of plugging my braun toothbrush charger into it. It doesn't fit!
The toothbrush has large pins, the shaver small pins. Opposite of what I wanted lol.

on the other hand, the shaver plug fits perfectly.

Note to self:

UK Shaver pins are shorter that euro

Shuko 3 pin fit the modern shaver light sockets well. (pins not insulated, but not a big deal as isolated, unless you grab both)
They don't fit 1960 ones due to the spacing issue. (UK narrow)

Shuko pins 4.8mm
UK shaver pins 5mm
Euro 2 pin 4mm

France has Live on the Right.
Eastern block Live on Left

Still not sure if a UK round pin 5A socket would have correct spacing for a UK shaver plug. I don't think it does.

Click Mode now sell toothbrush charger faceplates for under £25. (single and double face plates). No outlet or transformer.
