It’s not as bad as some will make out. Listening to the remainers on here, you could be mistaken for thinking EVERYTHING in the UK is more expensive than our EU 'friends'. Not so! Funny they never mention it when they are out hunting for stores with those elusive tomatoes. Swings and roundabouts really.

France, as an example, has always been more expensive than here. Partly because their farmers haven't bee screwed close to suicide like ours have by the big four here. They get actual profit from their milk and beef, and bread is still cherished as an artisan product.

Are we comparing prices, or cost of living ?

Looking at some of the prices they've listed, ketchup £1.92, it's 85p in Aldi, and toothpaste £2.28, we pay 99p in Home Bargains.

That survey strangely didn't include discount stores(Aldi/Lidl) for the UK but did so for the other countries, so the figures for the UK should be even lower.

From that report.

The UK imports around 40% of its food. Mr Roy at Circana said this meant it paid a "buyer's premium" in what is now an increasingly volatile supply chain. Brexit hasn't helped.

Was that what you were trying to highlight ?

It is of course all relative...

Try adding in average wages, local taxes, education costs, public transport costs...

Then rents, housing etc etc...

And you'll then be able to work out whether a few pence off a few food items stacks up...

Apparently straw prices are higher in the UK, because brexiteers are buying them all up in order to clutch at them

And you can buy delicious raw milk (or could in the early 2000s) from places like Carrefour or Super U.
