Should I pay to fix their defective work

I had lots of other things to work on in the property which were higher priority so turned my attention elsewhere until I came to do the boarding out at which point I cleaned the pipes.

As a matter of professional pride, any professional should be happy to return and fix any snags, and FOC.

Just an update from previous week, I again wrote to the plumber just asking if they would consider that the defect was there from their work and would they consider not charging for fixing it. I candidly explained that I could not prove this so it was only my word to go on and I would pay the invoice either way. No threats made. They have now agreed not to charge for the repair.

He should fix free, it as a matter of goodwill, for a valued customer, nevermind your needing to prove it. His excuses are absolute nonsense - just find a more reliable plumber.
As a heating engineer, no big deal to fix the problem. Good customer you keep, bad you ditch
Some tradespeople are short sighted and some customers can be a pain too*

* had a customer whose boiler installation was very poor and several things needed fixed or changed. I booked out the parts to carry out the repair. He asked that the repair be postponed. This postpone was so he could himself supply the components off eBay. I refused to effect repair as this repair would have been a case of ‘you touched it now you fix it’

Similar with local garage. Booked 5he VW Caddy for repair. Bill was plus £3k.
Shock absorbers failed prematurely and a day past full year when I called as had been busy, he refused to replace defective part
Broken coil spring he missed during the repair and he claimed that there was nothing he did not know about VW vehicles.
Now have a garage that is A1

Good outcome.
You were reasonable and got same back.
Go at it like a pitbull and you're likely to get a likewise response.

It's all to do with reputation and as has been said relationships and not biting the hand that feed you.

As a self employed/subcontractor tradesman I win some, I lose some (but not many).

A few years back I did some control panel modifications for a heating engineer when he changed some pumps. On the day we jointly commisioned the job.
2 days later I get a call from him saying something I did has stopped something else working so we agreed to meet on site the following day. I was quite early and diagnosed the problem to be a faulty relay and absolutely nothing to do with the work I did, not even within the same enclosure. As it was his contract I had a COT while waiting for him then demonstrated the fault to him by removing the faulty relay and replacing with a stock item. Technically I could have charged for the visit and the cost of the replacement. Did I? Nah. That is why my reputation is so good and 5 years after retiring I still get regular requests for help from previous employers.
