What is this, i think of this in terms of darkness, but i think that silence is a bit like light, or vice versa and no i have not been on the magic mushrooms again, this is a serious sciantific question. Can anyone shed any light on this question or any sound.

it is like darkness in as much as darkness is an absence of light, then silence is the absence of sound..

sound travels as waves of pressure which your ears turn into electrical impulses that the brain can decode.
if there are no waves, or indeed if there is no medium for the waves to travel in ( such as in a vacuum ) then your ears register no sound.

although this last statement is not entirely true as there can never be true silence since the internal workings of the human body create vibrations in the ear drum.. this is why when you put ear defenders on you generally hear your own breathing and heart beat much better...

sound or noise is subjective. it is just a form of energy. the fact that some recipients translate this energy into audible language is down to owning a brain and ears.

Except for the sound of the maggots munching their way through your flesh .................................sorry

Good point, but if you couldn't hear them you wouldn't know they were there!

Hello darkness, my old friend,
Ive come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.

Which brings us to that old question....

Does a tree falling in a forest make a sound if no one is there to hear it...?

If my physics are right then the tree falling will still cause air vibrations but will not be picked up by any eardrums so will not be a sound as we interpret it

Agree with you entirely.

But I once got involved in a forum argument, about this very question, it ran to nearly 900 posts....

Approx 60% agreed with us, some very interesting theories were put forward, but there was no convincing some posters.
It eventually got locked, as the arguments were getting quite heated, and people joining towards the end started the ball rolling again.....

"falling trees make a sound in the forest even when no one is there to hear them."
Sound ...
1) Vibrations transmitted through an elastic solid or a liquid or gas, with frequencies in the approximate range of 20 to 20,000 hertz, capable of being detected by human organs of hearing.

2) The sensation stimulated in the organs of hearing by such vibrations in the air or other medium.

Sound - so many different meanings.
