Get to your nearest snowdome for some lessons!!! I saw the Milton Keynes one the other week, would love to try that one in UAE though!!!

Have considered this and after speaking to a few people the general consensous is no to bother because (a) it not the real deal and (b) within the first morning of ski school, I would know how to go and stop etc.

Yeah, you 'go' when you are on top of a hill covered in snow, and wearing long sticks with slidey bottoms stuck to your boots, and you 'stop' when you hit a stationary object - i.e. fence, tree

Go prepared for the night life and lots of opportunity to get to know people.

Thats my take on how to stop! First few times ice skating i was the one flying into (and occasionally) over the side railings/boards! Feel a tree might be more unforgiving - fence it is!

most people either hate it or love it. The ones that generally hate it are the ones that cant do it. They cant do it cos they think a few lessons on a dry ski slope and no ski school lessons are sufficent. Book yourself into a ski school. Its fun, you make some good friends while on the holiday, have a laugh and learn to ski properly. That way you get the most out of it and then you dont need lessons the next time you go back. It may seem like a bind and an expense but its well worth it.

Skiing is all about weight distribution and trusting the edges of the skis to do the work. Relax and enjoy it. The worst bit is when you hit an icy patch and one ski disappears from under you, that's real fun. If you have your own skis you can maintain a sharp edge to them. The ski schools won't bother so the edges will probably be dull so when you hit a patch of ice you'll go down. Just blame it on the skis ;)

Have fun,
Gcol

Oh and when you're walking back to your hotel in your ski boots, be careful if you undo the boot straps to make walking easier. Mine once caught the strap on the other boot and went arse over tit and cut my knee.

I have been skiing for many many many years, my advice do not bother with lessons in the UK.
I do not know what country you are going to but the biggest problem with ski school is the English (language, not people). & the size of class.
The plus side of ski is you meet like minded people. I took my partner 2 years ago she couldnt get on with it, (poor beginnes slope). I have talked her into going again (6 March), as I have been to this resort & hotel many times I know she will pick it up this time, I have also promised her that we will go skiing xmas.
BYTW when she went skiing before she was great at the apree time.

For info, I stay up the mountain in Saux, yes you are stuck up there all night, if you do go to town you do need to arrange for a skiddoo to pick you up (thats fun).
Anyway I am sure you will enjoy yourself, have fun.

A bit of exercise before you go is helpful. If it is your 1st time then you are really gonna be knackered. This is not necessarily because you are unfit, it's just that your technique will initially mean that you will expend about considerably more effort doing the same things that an experienced skier does. Try if possible to lean forward down the slope and not backward into the mountain, this way you will prevent your leg muscles from being burnt out really quickly. It's difficult to get the hang of, 'cos it doesn't seem natural, but if you can do it, you find skiing a LOT easier.

This thread is about skiing and all the adverts at the bottom are about skiing! Clever! (Or it was a minute ago anyway).
