try and get some old roof slates, not the small chippings they use for landscaping 
Use fibre cement slates. These are produced under immense pressure and have a crushing strength of a trillion tonnes.

But you can't hammer pieces in to wedge the bricks - they are just one thickness and the fibre slates just crumble when hammered.
