Is it a good idea/worth it to connect all the smoke alarms together to the mains and a single consumer unit mcb? Or are you better off having separate stand-alone ones?

You should definately interconnect smoke alarms so that if one detects a fire, they all sound. On a new build, they should be connected to the mains and I'd strongly recommend battery backup, the cost difference is minimal.

If the mains smoke alarm has battery back up, there is no need to use a seperate MCB, otherwise a seperate MCB must be used.

See building regulations approved document B and BS 5839-6 for more information.

Also, the advise in BS5839 regarding the selection and siting of smake alarms should be followed, including using a mix of optical and ionisation alarms for dwellings.
