Tackling racism in football: from silence to speaking out

I'm not hearing anything.

In wake of this take over of Newcastle United and only being a year away from The world cup

I'm not hearing much from the Premiership players on social injustices.
Why should they?

After all the UK government authorises billions of pounds worth of arms sales that are being used horrifically in places like Yemen...

And the FA do SFA when it comes to addressing the real problem of what a 'fair owner' actually means...

Both come down to money, plain and simple!

And that's exactly what it is....... that's my point.

I take it you didn't see the documentary on football racism last night?

One problem is, which is that same in any job and talked about recently by Tom Ilube on Desert Island Discs this week, is that it is very hard to raise the topic of racism in your place of work without risking losing your job, or being considered a trouble maker, or being accused of "playing the race card" as soon as you experience racist abuse, criticism or "just" casual racism.

The players want to play, and for most of them, that is more important than trying to beat a problem that is endemic in white British society.

Social injustice comes in many forms... do you know how many foreign nationals have died building the world cup stadiums?

I think it's fair to point out it's not just a British problem.

So how do you think the players should react?

Should it be that 'we're not going to play for Newcastle'?

Newcastle United FC (NUFC) has announced that it is "proudly supporting" the Football v Homophobia (FvH) campaign

In Saudi Arabia sodomy is punishable by death.

I spot a tiny problem

They will be out the door soon enough..

But in answer to your question; yes they should refuse to play if they believe in what they preach....

I would have expected the England players to walk off the pitch against Hungary.

I expect pro players to boycott Facebook and twitter until they deal with the abuse from online trolls.

Wasn’t their previous owner that chap that paid sports direct employees below minimum wages and had terrible working conditions? Didn't see the footballers complain then so why the surprise that they are not complaining now?
