Soggy bottom?

the meat content has been gravely reduced

I bought a small stock before recent problems, was surprised to find that instead of chunks of meat, they now contain gravy with a sediment of fine paricles.

i use the old tins in the garage and looked up the meat content printed on the back of tins frfom a few years ago, and now. It has dropped severely.

There is a Fray Bentos web page somewhere, full of user complaints.

ISTR that **** edit - Baxters own the brand name in UK and are responsible for the poor quality. The brand name is owned by **** edit - Campbells Soup Co. in Australia and the recipe still includes meat.

Years ago Fray Bentos products came from a beef farm in Argentina.

I think I previously bought some about ten years ago, and they were then a cheap but acceptable pie in an emergency with reasonable meat content.

I expect there's a date on the old tins in the garage.

After the Falklands unpleasantness I didn't eat corned beef for about 20 years, can't beat a corned beef and pickle sandwich.

The best way I find to get a crispy pie is to make your own. I bake the case blind, with ceramic beans.

Then fill it and put your kid on.

Crimp the lid well and use egg to help seal. Poke a hole or two in the lid to let steam out and brush on an egg wash.

I find shallower pies crisp easier.

That part I knew..
Fray Bentos is the name of a town in Uruguay
