Hi, we had a guy dig this hole, down to the soil clay pipe, he didn't come back, and we have decided to do things a different way, so i have started to fill the hole on top the clay pipe, i have poured Pea Gravel in the Gap i made in the centre of the pipe and surrounding it, and compacted it down, with my FOOT, both sides, do i go over the top the pipe with the Pea Gravel? and if so how high? or just back fill it?. thanks

Cover the pipe, gives it some protection from any stones/lumps in the backfill.

Hi Hugh, cover the pipe? before i back fill it? do i put a slab over it? part way to the top? i filled it half way up the pipe with Pea gravel, then have back filled, with soft mud, until, about 300mm now all i have left are the bricks and clay that was in there, do i put this in?. thanks

Ok, if you've already backfilled, dont worry about it. Usual practice with new drains is to bed in peagravel, then once happy with installation, cover the lot in peagravel to protect the pipework before backfilling. Provided you've an initial level of cover with no big lumps or stones in it, then anything goes on top of that.

Thanks Hugh, i put lots of soft back fill on the pipe side, and clay went on top last, i left out all the big bricks that was in there, should i do it back up and do it again, then chuck all big bricks back in it?? cheers

Hi Hugh, this is the other pipe exposed, and what i found, what do you think?? it would be good i can dismantle that old drain, and use the pipe right there, rather than have to take the lot apart, can you advise me please of what you think is the best thing to do, thanks, really appreciate the help.

Cut the clay at a suitable point, (you'll need a disc cutter), chamfer edges, stuck suitable coupling on and come away in plastic.

Hi Hugh, and i'm chamfering the inside of the pipe? or outside of the pipe? thanks

Both ideally. Depends what sort of coupling your using, if one of the rigid plastic types, outside edge is vital to stop it displacing the seal when you push coupling on, flexible rubber type not so important, but dont leave a rough edge on the inside where anything can catch. Women and toilets aren't always a good combination....

I did join a Plumbing Page on Facebook, but the Admin seemed to shut down every other post before anyone could offer constructive advice, so I came off it again. I do enjoy helping out on here, always the odd one who has to try and take over, but seems he's blocked me, (Not that I'm bothered.)

It was too much Hard Work arguing with him...

Hi Hugh, i was thinking that, inside chamfer for the clay, make it less likely to catch, what would i use to chamfer the inside of the clay?? thank Hugh.

Hi Hugh, this is what i have mocked up, it's going to need some tweaking, can i put the pipe like this? or not, obviously it will have to be cut shorter as it get dropped to the required height. cheers
